For thousands of years, energetic exercise forms such as Yoga, Tai Chi, and meditative practices have focused on the spine & back as an important site for the development, collection and flow of the body’s energy. These practices have in common the awareness and emphasis on proper breathing, posture, and movement. Even when we are not consciously aware of our own body’s energy, various exercises such as Pilates, Tai Chi or yoga, that correct alignment and muscle balance of the spine, can improve our overall energy level and sense of well-being. Often, these forms of exercise have been used as a form of back pain treatment. These types of exercise can become enjoyable lifelong habits that enhance our lives and the health of our spines.
