The Superion Indirect Decompression System (Vertiflex) was developed to treat patients with symptomatic moderate lumbar spinal stenosis. The device is made of titanium and is designed to be placed between the spinous processes (the bumps you can feel under your skin) to help make more room for the nerves which are affected by your spinal stenosis.
Benefits of this device include:
You may be a candidate for the Vertiflex device if you have symptomatic moderate lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Moderate spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the space around the nerves, and can be diagnosed with an MRI or CT scan. You may have symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis if you experience the following symptoms:
If you have tried physical therapy, medications, and injections without relief, you may be a candidate for the Vertiflex device.
Before undergoing the Vertiflex procedure, you must complete the preoperative process, which includes:
Once you have completed this process, you will be scheduled for the Vertiflex procedure. It is performed at a surgery center in an outpatient setting. The device is implanted through a small incision (about 1 cm) between the spinous processes of the spine using fluoroscopy (x-ray guidance). The procedure takes about 30 minutes to perform one level.
